Oshitoishi Hill is located on the northern edge of the Aso caldera at an altitude of approximately 840m. The hundreds of giant stones scattered across the grassland are believed to have been objects of worship since the Jomon period. In particular, the largest stone, called 'Oshitoishi,' has ancient characters (petroglyphs) carved into it, and its connection to the ancient Sumerian civilization has been suggested. It's theorized that this hill was a site for rituals of a Sumerian maritime people, evoking a sense of ancient romance. From the hill, you can enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view of the Aso Five Peaks and the Kuju Mountains, offering beautiful scenery in every season. Oshitoishi Hill is a special place where nature, history, and ancient mystery come together.
