Hirofujien

Overview

Hirofujien is a garden in Hekinan City, Aichi Prefecture, renowned for its magnificent wisteria trellis. Tradition holds that it was created around 1820 by Oda Kosaku, a man deeply devoted to wisteria, who used wood and bamboo to construct the trellis. The Oda family has maintained and cherished the wisteria for generations since. The garden takes its name, Hirofujien (literally, "Hirofujien's wisteria"), from the character "Hiro" (広), meaning "wide" or "vast," from the name of the first Kosaku. Hirofujien's wisteria trellis covers 1,000 square meters, showcasing long flower clusters exceeding 1.5 meters in length. The sight of the wisteria in full bloom is truly awe-inspiring, with blossoms in delicate shades of purple and white, filling the air with a sweet fragrance. Every year, from late April to early May, the wisteria comes into bloom, and Hirofujien hosts the "Fuji Matsuri" festival. During the day, the wisteria trellis is bathed in sunlight, creating a beautiful scene. At night, the garden is illuminated by paper lanterns, transforming the atmosphere into a magical and enchanting experience. Beyond the wisteria, Hirofujien offers a display of seasonal flowers throughout the year. Cherry blossoms in spring, hydrangeas in summer, and autumn foliage provide a continuously beautiful backdrop.
