Overview

Amanawa Shinmeigu Shrine, considered Kamakura's oldest shrine, is dedicated to Amaterasu Omikami. Located a 6-minute walk from Hase Station, accessible via the Enoden Line from Kamakura Station. Known as Kamakura's oldest shrine and for its ties to the Minamoto clan, it's said that Minamoto no Yorinobu prayed at this shrine during his descent to Kamakura, and that Minamoto no Yoshiie was born as a result. Minamoto no Yoritomo, the founder of the Kamakura Shogunate, also revered the shrine. The peaceful and tranquil atmosphere of the grounds is perfect for those seeking a relaxing escape from the hustle and bustle of Kamakura. Behind the main shrine, there is a stone monument marking the site of the former residence of Adachi Morishige, a close retainer of Minamoto no Yoritomo. A roughly 3-meter-tall stone torii gate, believed to date back to the Kamakura period, also stands on the grounds, showcasing the architectural style of the era.
