Kana Garden, officially the Kanagawa Prefectural Center for Flowers and Greenery, is a sprawling 92,000-square-meter complex botanical garden that opened on March 1, 2010, on the former site of the Kanagawa Prefectural Agricultural Research Institute. The garden's concept is deeply inspired by Czech author Karel Čapek's "The Gardener's Year," subtly encouraging visitors to "add gardening to everyday life" throughout its design.
Its paramount attraction is "Bara no Wadachi" (The Rose Path), a magnificent rose garden featuring approximately 1,300 varieties and 2,300 bushes. Here, visitors can embark on a journey through the history of rose breeding as they admire the exquisite blooms. In May and October, Rose Festivals transform the garden, enveloping it in a sweet, intoxicating fragrance.
Beyond roses, the "Flower Zone" offers a vibrant tapestry of seasonal flowering trees and plants, including hanamomo (flowering peach), water lilies, salvia, hydrangeas, mukuge (rose of Sharon), and maples, ensuring a captivating display year-round.
The garden also places a strong emphasis on hands-on experiences. The "Agri Zone" invites visitors to participate in rice planting, harvesting, and vegetable picking. With a "Kids Farm" and "Universal Play Equipment" designed for children, it's a wonderful place for families to connect with nature together.
Furthermore, the "Megumi Research Building Zone" serves as a hub for learning, offering exhibits on agriculture and horticulture, along with a library stocked with related books.
The barrier-free design ensures that visitors with strollers and wheelchairs can navigate the garden with ease. At the "Kitchen Hana" restaurant, you can savor delicious dishes crafted from fresh local ingredients, while the "Dear Čapek" shop offers a delightful selection of Kanagawa specialties and souvenirs. With annual passes and a diverse array of workshops available, Kana Garden promises new discoveries with every visit, ensuring a rich and fulfilling experience.
