The garden features gentle slopes, so comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended for your visit. On sunny days, the sun can be quite strong, so bringing a parasol or hat is advised for your comfort. You'll find benches and chairs conveniently scattered throughout the garden for your relaxation. Please note that operating hours and admission fees may change depending on the rose blooming status, so be sure to check the official website for the most current information before your visit. An exclusive Goshuin (a special commemorative stamp featuring an original rose garden design) is also available for purchase at ¥1,000.
Hanamaki Onsen Rose Garden is a historic garden, with construction beginning in 1958 and officially opening in 1960. Spanning approximately 5,000 tsubo (about 4 acres), the vast grounds are home to roughly 6,000 roses of 450 varieties, showcasing a year-round riot of colorful blooms. The 'Sundial Flowerbed,' designed by fairy tale author Kenji Miyazawa, is a precious spot where visitors can experience his unique worldview, and it's highly popular for commemorative photos. Its design blends Miyazawa's deep love for nature with a scientific perspective, offering both literary inspiration and intellectual stimulation to all who visit.
Furthermore, in 2016, it was recognized as a 'Lover's Sanctuary' satellite, making it a recommended spot for couples hoping for successful relationships. The garden features a monument enshrining a 'Moon Stone,' providing a romantic setting amidst the roses to pledge eternal love.
Numerous original Hanamaki Onsen rose varieties have also been cultivated, and encountering roses with their own unique stories, such as 'Holiday Hanamaki' and 'Happy Rose 88,' is another charm. Many of these varieties are disease-resistant and easy to grow, with rose seedlings available for purchase at the adjacent gardening shop.
Moreover, from summer to autumn, the 'Night Rose Garden' features evening illuminations, allowing visitors to appreciate the roses in a magical atmosphere distinct from daytime. The garden also offers rest areas and a gardening shop, with various features designed for visitors to enjoy roses with all five senses. Visitors can enjoy discounted admission by purchasing advance tickets online, and rose-themed Goshuin (temple/shrine seals) are also available, making them cherished souvenirs or mementos of a trip. We invite you to experience this tranquil space, where beautiful roses and the unique culture of Kenji Miyazawa's hometown converge.
