The Oyama-zakura cherry blossoms at Nishi Zao Pasture are located at Nishi Zao Pasture, about a 30-minute drive from Yamagata city center. The high altitude means these blossoms are the latest to bloom in the city, typically reaching their peak around Golden Week. Said to have been growing since the Heian period, these cherry trees were even visited by the renowned poet Saigyō Hōshi, who is said to have left behind the famous verse, “Taguinaki omoi ideha no sakura kana, usukurenai no hana no nioi wa” (a verse expressing deep emotion at the sight of the blossoms).
