The Kazuo Tanaka Memorial Museum is a museum dedicated to the works of Kazuo Tanaka, a Japanese painter who depicted the abundant nature of Amami Oshima Island in his unique style. Born in Tochigi Prefecture in 1908, Tanaka showed artistic talent from a young age and was known as a Nanga painter in his youth. He entered the Tokyo School of Fine Arts at 18 but dropped out after only two months. Later, he distanced himself from the central art world, moving to Amami Oshima Island alone in his 50s. Captivated by Amami's nature, he energetically painted subtropical birds, plants, and landscapes. His works reflect a deep love and keen observation of Amami's nature, expressed through unique colors and compositions. At the Kazuo Tanaka Memorial Museum, you can gain a deep understanding of Tanaka's life and works, and through his art, experience Amami's nature and culture. The museum is nestled in the lush natural environment of Amami Oshima, allowing visitors to enjoy both Tanaka's artwork and the island's beautiful scenery simultaneously.
