The Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art, opened on May 3, 1989, was the first public museum in Japan to fully dedicate itself to contemporary art. Designed by architect Kisho Kurokawa, the building harmoniously blends with the natural landscape while boldly expressing its pioneering spirit as a museum. The materials change from natural stone, to tile, to aluminum as you ascend the vertical axis, symbolizing the progression of civilization and the passage of time, embodying the designer's unique philosophy of "coexistence".
