The Matsue History Museum is a captivating venue that encapsulates the allure of Matsue, a castle town steeped in 400 years of history. Located to the east of National Treasure Matsue Castle, on the venerable grounds where the chief retainers' residences of the Matsue Domain once stood, its exterior evokes a samurai estate with its plaster and shiplap walls and approximately 60,000 smoked roof tiles, exuding an air of dignity. The museum comprises the 'Main Building,' the 'Asahi Family Residence of Matsue Domain's Chief Retainers,' and the 'Nagaya-mon Gate' (long-house gate), all set within expansive grounds featuring a beautiful Japanese garden.
In the exhibition areas, the Matsue Domain's administration, the formation of the castle town, people's daily lives, and the industries that supported the domain are presented in an easy-to-understand manner using a variety of methods, including actual historical materials, videos, audio, stage backdrops, and paper-cutting art. Particularly noteworthy exhibits include a replica of the prayer plaque from the keep of National Treasure Matsue Castle and a reproduction of Sanada Yukimura's war fan.
Visitors can also delve into the tea ceremony culture that flourished under Matsudaira Harusato (Fumai), the 7th lord of the Matsue Domain. The "Den Rikyu Tea Room" showcases a reconstructed tea room believed to have been associated with Sen no Rikyu about 400 years ago. At Kiharu Tea House, overlooking the Japanese garden, guests can leisurely savor seasonal creative Japanese sweets and matcha green tea, immersing themselves in Matsue's proud wagashi culture. Original goods and souvenirs are available for purchase at the Enshizuku Museum Shop. With historical experience events held regularly, it is truly a special facility where visitors can deeply experience Matsue's history with all five senses.
