Nanki-Shirahama Onsen is one of Japan's three oldest hot springs, boasting over 1,300 years of history, even mentioned in the Nihon Shoki (The Chronicles of Japan). Known as "Muro-no-Yu," it is said that successive emperors, including Empress Saimei, Empress Jito, and Emperor Monmu, visited these healing waters. This area became widely known as "Shirahama" after World War I, when a unique hot spring resort was developed in contrast to the Enzan district, deriving its name from the stunning white sand beach, "Shiraharahama." Post-war, it bustled with honeymooners and group tours, and with the opening of Adventure World and Shirahama Energy Land, it has evolved into a family-friendly leisure hot spring destination.
Particularly noteworthy is its geological intrigue: high-temperature hot springs bubble up despite not being located in a volcanic zone. It boasts a diverse range of spring qualities, including saline, carbonic acid, and bicarbonate springs, which are believed to be effective for gastrointestinal ailments, neuralgia, and rheumatism.
The hot spring town features a variety of accommodations, from grand hotels to quaint inns, many of which draw from the natural springs. Public bathhouses are also abundant, with "Saki-no-Yu," an open-air bath that feels at one with the Pacific Ocean, being a must-visit. An extraordinary experience awaits as you soak while feeling the ocean waves just inches away. "Shirara-yu" adjacent to Shirarahama Beach and "Shirasuna," a mixed-gender open-air bath right on the beach, are also unique attractions.
The surrounding area is dotted with scenic spots where you can enjoy rich natural beauty, such as "Engetsu Island" with its beautiful sunset views, the grand natural formation of "Senjojiki," and the dramatic cliffs of "Sandanbeki." Popular "Adventure World," home to a panda family, and the interactive theme park "Shirahama Energy Land" offer fun for all ages, from children to adults.
Furthermore, premium seafood like Ise-ebi (Japanese spiny lobster) and Kushi (a type of grouper), harvested from the bountiful waters of the Kii Channel, are local gastronomic delights. Various events are held throughout the year, with cherry blossoms in spring, sea bathing and fireworks in summer, Kumano Kodo walks in autumn, and hot springs and Kushi cuisine in winter, ensuring visitors are captivated by its seasonal charms. Nanki-Shirahama Onsen, where ancient history and modern leisure merge, is truly a "hot spring nation" resort that offers new discoveries and deep impressions with every visit.
