Kaminoyama Onsen

Overview

Kaminoyama Onsen is a historic hot spring town in Kaminoyama City, Yamagata Prefecture. In the past, it was renowned as one of the "Ou Sanrakugo" (Three Great Hot Spring Resorts of Ou), along with Yunohana Onsen in Yamagata Prefecture and Higashiyama Onsen in Fukushima Prefecture, flourishing as a spa town. The origins of Kaminoyama Onsen date back to 1458 (Chōroku 2), when a traveling monk from Hizen, Gesshu, discovered a crane healing its wounds in the hot spring, leading to its name, "Tsurukne no Yu" (Crane's Leg Hot Spring). During the Edo period, Kaminoyama Castle and Kaminoyama Domain were established here, leading to its prosperity not only as a hot spring resort but also as a castle town. It also thrived as a post town on the Ushu Kaido highway. Kaminoyama Onsen is characterized by its sodium-calcium chloride-sulfate spring water (weakly alkaline), reputed to be effective for neuralgia, muscle pain, joint pain, cold extremities, and skin diseases. The hot spring town offers a variety of experiences, including public bathhouses, day spas, and foot baths. While there used to be seven public bathhouses, some have since closed. Many nature-rich tourist spots surround Kaminoyama Onsen, allowing visitors to enjoy both the onsen and sightseeing. For example, there's Kaminoyama Castle Ruins, a symbol of Kaminoyama City, and Hayama Park, offering beautiful seasonal scenery. Kaminoyama Onsen is a relaxing haven surrounded by history and nature.
