Overview

Zao Onsen is a hot spring located in the southeastern part of Yamagata City, Yamagata Prefecture, at the western foot of the Zao mountain range. This old hot spring boasts a history of 1900 years. Situated at an elevation of 880 meters, it offers diverse natural beauty throughout the year. The defining features of Zao Onsen are its abundant hot spring water and strongly acidic sulfur springs. Sulfur springs are known for their sterilizing properties and ability to strengthen the skin, leading to its long history as a spa resort. It's also said to have beautifying effects, earning it the names "beauty skin hot spring" and "beauty-making hot spring." The hot spring town is lined with communal bathhouses, day-trip onsen facilities, Ryokans (traditional Japanese inns), and hotels, offering a variety of onsen experiences. Zao Onsen has three communal bathhouses: Kamyu, Shimoyu, and Kawarayu, all within a three-minute walk of each other, making it easy to enjoy a hot spring hopping experience. In winter, Zao Onsen Ski Resort opens, becoming one of Tohoku's largest ski resorts. The varied slopes and fantastical snow-covered trees captivate skiers and snowboarders. The "Zao snow monsters" (Juhyo), iconic symbols of Zao Onsen, are a winter spectacle. The peak season for viewing the snow monsters is January to February, and they can be seen near the summit of Jizo-dake in the Zao mountain range. The Zao Ropeway offers a closer look, and events such as "Juhyo illumination" are also held. From spring to autumn, the area is stunning with fresh greenery and autumn foliage, perfect for hiking and trekking. The Zao mountain range boasts many highlights, including the crater lake, Okama.
