Kawaji Onsen is a hot spring resort located near the confluence of the Kinugawa and Oga Rivers in Nikko City, Tochigi Prefecture. According to local legend, it was accidentally discovered after the Oga River flooded following the Igarigoko dam collapse during the Kyoho era.
Boasting a long history as a spa town, Kawaji Onsen was once renowned for its healing properties, famously described as, "Kawaji for wounds, and Taki for burns."
Today, the onsen town is brimming with Ryokans (traditional Japanese inns) and hotels, along with public bathhouses and other attractions, such as sacred stones.
The Yakushi no Yu, affectionately known as "Iwaburo" (Rock Bath), a public bathhouse along the river, is particularly popular for its open-air onsen offering breathtaking views. The "Onadeshi", a sacred stone shaped like a vulva, is believed to bring good fortune in matters of fertility, matchmaking, and safe childbirth, attracting many visitors.
