Kandatsu Snow Resort, located in Yuzawa-machi, Minamiuonuma-gun, Niigata Prefecture, has been a pioneer in Japan's ski culture since its opening as "Kandatsu Kogen Ski Resort" in 1986. During the ski boom of the bubble era, it boasted over a million visitors annually with innovative services like early morning "sunrise skiing," "Kandatsu Gals" (ski resort companions), and the VIP room "SAKURA Lounge." After several management changes, it was rebranded as "Kandatsu Snow Resort" in 2019, undergoing facility renovations, adding tree run courses, and improving descent routes, evolving into an even more appealing resort.
The resort's greatest appeal lies in its exceptional snow quality and abundant snowfall, thanks to its prime location. Situated in a heavy snowfall region, combined with its terrain surrounded by ridges on three sides and north-facing slopes, it offers superb powder snow for extended enjoyment. Its 16 diverse courses cater to all skill levels, from gentle slopes perfect for beginners to safely enjoy long runs, to the challenging "Orion" course with a maximum 45-degree gradient, the mogul course known as "The Sanctuary," and the "S-CLOVER PARK" produced by Atsushi Ishikawa. Every rider will find satisfaction here.
Furthermore, as a resort primarily targeting day-trippers, it boasts excellent facilities. The massive 6-story center house features "Kami-no-Yu," one of the largest bathing facilities in the Yuzawa area, complete with open-air baths, saunas, and cold plunge pools. Spacious relaxation areas and private nap rooms are also available, allowing you to soothe your tired body after a day on the slopes and relax to your heart's content. On Fridays, Saturdays, and the day before national holidays, the resort even offers all-night operations, making it possible to enjoy the luxurious experience of snowboarding or skiing through the night, taking a nap, and then refreshing in the hot springs before heading home. Access is also superb, with a free shuttle bus from Echigo-Yuzawa Station taking approximately 7 minutes, and a car ride from Yuzawa IC on the Kan-Etsu Expressway taking about 3 minutes. It's a truly unique snow resort, blending a rich history that has shaped Japan's ski scene with ever-evolving modern attractions.
