Kiyomizu-dera Temple

Overview

Located in Yasugi City, Shimane Prefecture, Kiyomizu-dera Temple is a Tendai Buddhist temple with a long and storied history, said to have been founded in 587 AD during the reign of Emperor Yomei. Its mountain name is Zuikōzan, and its principal deity is the Eleven-faced Kannon Bodhisattva. It has long been a place of faith, serving as the 28th temple of the Chugoku Kannon Pilgrimage, the 27th temple of the Izumo Kannon Pilgrimage, and the 11th temple of the Izumo Kuni Shinbutsu Reijo. The temple grounds are home to numerous impressive structures, including the Kondō (main hall) and three-storied pagoda, both designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan. The three-storied pagoda is particularly noteworthy, as visitors can enter and view precious Buddhist statues and carvings up close. The temple gardens offer beautiful scenery throughout the year, with cherry blossoms in spring and vibrant autumn foliage. It's a place worth visiting any time of year.
