During peak seasons, the Keinan Bus 'Myoko Kogen Liner' also runs from Joetsu Myoko Station on the Hokuriku Shinkansen.
By car: 6 km from Myoko Kogen IC on the Joshinetsu Expressway via a prefectural road. For the uphill road to the ski resort from National Route 18, studded tires are recommended, and carrying metal snow chains is also advised. This ski resort operates independently from Akakura Kanko Resort Ski Area. Therefore, lift tickets valid only for this area, such as early bird one-day passes, cannot be used at Akakura Kanko Resort Ski Area.
In the Akakura Onsen Village at the foot of the mountain, there is a day-use hot spring facility called 'Taki-no-Yu.' However, it is closed during the ski season (December to April), so we recommend exploring other ryokan and hotels in the area that welcome day visitors for their hot springs.
Akakura Onsen Ski Resort stands as one of Japan's most prestigious ski resorts, sharing a rich history with Shiga Kogen and Nozawa Onsen. Its origins trace back to 1937 with the opening of the Akakura Kanko Hotel (a national policy hotel), simultaneously becoming a designated international ski resort by the Japanese government, serving as a pivotal hub for attracting international tourists. Its legacy includes pioneering the development of Japanese ski culture, notably with the installation of Japan's first ski lift approved by the Ministry of Transport (then) in 1950.
Spread across the expansive base of Mt. Myoko, the resort is committed to 100% natural snow, offering the finest powder snow unique to one of the world's premier heavy snowfall regions. Its 17 diverse courses are skillfully designed to leverage the natural contours of the terrain. Beginner-friendly areas like the 'Ginrei Slope' and 'Elegant Course' feature gentle inclines and beautiful tree-lined runs, ideal for families and first-time skiers/snowboarders. Intermediate skiers will relish the comfortable cruising on the 'Panorama Course' and 'Alpine Course,' while advanced enthusiasts seeking a challenge can tackle the 'Mogul Challenge Course' and un-groomed powder runs.
Akakura Onsen Ski Resort also places a strong emphasis on night skiing, with Kumado Night Ski operating until 9 PM daily. A special treat on Saturdays is that the slopes are groomed before night skiing, offering pristine conditions akin to fresh morning runs. The Yodel Info Center further enhances convenience with a lounge accessible from 6 AM and a dedicated kids' room.
Access is convenient, with free shuttle buses running from Myoko Kogen Station (on the Echigo Tokimeki Railway Myoko Haneuma Line and Shinano Railway Kita Shinano Line). For those driving, it's approximately 6 km from the Myoko Kogen IC on the Joshinetsu Expressway. However, as it is a region of heavy snowfall, visitors traveling by car in winter are advised to have studded tires and carry metal snow chains.
After an exhilarating day on the slopes, guests can indulge in the renowned Akakura Onsen hot spring town, whose history dates back to the Edo period, warming their bodies from within. With numerous inns and hotels offering day-use options, the luxurious combination of skiing and hot springs is Akakura Onsen Ski Resort's greatest appeal. While the complex terrain means that on-slope signage might be somewhat limited, this also adds to the enjoyment of exploring the diverse courses.
