Nestled quietly in the northernmost part of Shiga Kogen, Nagano Prefecture, Okushiga Kogen Ski Resort is more than just a place to ski. True to its concept of 'healing from the depths of your heart,' it offers an unparalleled nature experience and sophisticated resort life. Boasting an exceptional annual snowfall, all courses feature 100% natural snow. Japan's premier dry powder continues to captivate skiers and snowboarders alike. The resort features a diverse array of eight courses catering to all levels and preferences, including a 2,800m long downhill course, a mogul training area ('Kobu Dojo'), and a kids' forest course. The permanent 'Kumaotoshi Course,' which remains un-groomed, is a particular highlight for advanced skiers, consistently challenging them with large moguls.
A unique characteristic of this resort is its commitment to tranquility, achieved by limiting the number of overnight guests, thus fostering an atmosphere of an extended-stay resort. In an ambiance reminiscent of a luxurious European resort, every service, from dining and accommodation to ski tuning, lessons, childcare, and kids' parks, is offered with superior quality.
Beyond winter, Okushiga's allure continues into the green season. The ski slopes transform into hiking trails adorned with alpine flowers, leading to scenic walks through birch forests and pastures where young cattle and horses graze freely. A wealth of activities awaits, including trekking to Mt. Yakemine and Mt. Iwasuge, a 6-hole golf course, tennis courts, and stream fishing. During the autumn foliage season, the vibrant colors along the forest road leading to Okushiga Valley and Akiyama-go are breathtaking, drawing numerous visitors.
Furthermore, prestigious hotels such as Okushiga Kogen Hotel and Hotel Grand Phenix Okushiga, known as favored accommodations for the Imperial Family, welcome guests with exquisite cuisine and unparalleled hospitality. Even small details, like the discovery of an historic charcoal kiln now repurposed as a pizza oven, speak to the area's rich history and harmony with nature. For discerning skiers and anyone seeking a tranquil connection with nature throughout the seasons, Okushiga Kogen is truly an ideal retreat.
