Hakuba Happo-one Ski Resort has woven its history since the establishment of its first ski hut in 1929, and in 1998, it became the venue for the alpine skiing speed events at the Nagano Olympics, establishing itself as one of Japan's premier large-scale ski resorts. Take the Happo Alpine Line, boasting a 1,060m elevation difference, to the summit, and a grand panorama of the 3,000-meter-class Northern Alps unfolds before your eyes. The famous Riesen Slalom Course is popular among intermediate to advanced skiers who enjoy carving on its beautifully groomed slopes. The mogul runs of Usagidaira and Kurobishi slopes captivate seasoned skiers and snowboarders. For beginners, the Sakka Slope at the base is ideal, designed with families in mind.
The area above Kurobishi-daira, designated as a Natural Monument of Nagano Prefecture, belongs to Chubu Sangaku National Park, home to 347 species of alpine plants, including endemic varieties, as well as special natural monuments like the Japanese serow and rock ptarmigan. In summer, popular activities include hiking to the mystical Happo Pond, where the Hakuba Sanzan (three peaks of Hakuba) are reflected on its surface, reached by taking a gondola and then a lift. There's a well-maintained boardwalk course and a shorter, rocky path, allowing visitors to choose according to their fitness level. At Usagidaira on the summit, the scenic relaxing terrace "Hakuba Mountain Beach" offers a beach resort-like ambiance, where you can refresh yourself in a sauna or jacuzzi. It truly is a paradise in the sky, offering unforgettable experiences to visitors throughout the year.
