Ikeda City Satsukiyama Zoo is a free zoo located in Satsukiyama Park in Ikeda City. It started in 1957 (Showa 32) when animals were transferred from Kinkazan, Oga District, Miyagi Prefecture. Since then, the facilities and staff have been continuously improved and expanded. In 1967 (Showa 42), to commemorate the sister city agreement between Ikeda City and Launceston, Australia, Bennett's wallabies were gifted. Following this, in 1970 (Showa 45), seven animals, including two black sheep and wallabies that had been showcased at the World Expo, were entrusted as goodwill ambassadors from Australia. Further, in 1990 (Heisei 2), to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the sister city agreement, three wombats were gifted. The number of animals gradually increased.
In October 2000 (Heisei 12), the zoo started keeping rabbits, guinea pigs, mara, emus, and chickens, and opened an interactive petting area.
Currently, a variety of animals are kept, including wombats, wallabies, alpacas, ponies, emus, donkeys, sheep, and owls. The zoo isn't very large, making it easy for families to visit comfortably. In the petting area, you can interact with rabbits and guinea pigs.
Adjacent Satsukiyama Park has an observation deck and playground equipment, allowing for a full day of enjoyment. Satsukiyama Zoo is a valuable place for children to interact with animals and nature. We encourage families to visit!
