Hitachi Kokubunji Temple

Overview

Hitachi Kokubunji Temple, established in 741 during the Nara period by imperial order of Emperor Shomu, is designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. It once boasted even more extensive grounds than it does today. However, numerous fires and wars led to the loss of many structures. The present Main Hall, rebuilt in the Muromachi period, showcases a beautiful architectural style incorporating elements of the Kamakura period. Inside, the principal image of Yakushi Nyorai (Bhaishajyaguru) is enshrined. Yakushi Nyorai is revered as the Buddha of healing and longevity. Other enshrined images include Amitabha, Shakyamuni, and Eleven-headed Kannon. The temple's beautiful garden is another highlight, filled with seasonal blossoms that delight visitors. Cherry blossoms in spring and autumn foliage are particularly stunning, attracting many visitors. Hitachi Kokubunji Temple is beloved by many as a place to sense history within a tranquil setting.
