While the grounds aren't expansive, you can enjoy a peaceful stroll through the moss garden and bamboo grove. Photography is permitted; however, tripods are prohibited. Please be mindful of this.
Giouji Temple is an ancient and charming temple nestled in the western mountains of Kyoto. Legend says that Giou, a favored concubine of Taira no Kiyomori during the Heian period, lost her position and became a nun, establishing a hermitage here. The temple's name, Giouji, comes from her. Giouji is famous for its moss garden, a lush carpet of green that invites you into a world of quiet contemplation. The moss garden changes with the seasons, offering beautiful views throughout the year, from the fresh green of spring to the deep green of summer, culminating in the vibrant autumn foliage.
Giouji also features Giouzuka, a burial mound commemorating Giou's tragic love story. This quiet monument speaks volumes about her fleeting life. The temple also boasts a natural landscape of bamboo groves and maple trees. The autumn foliage is particularly stunning, creating a fantastical scene with the brightly colored leaves against the backdrop of the moss garden.
