Myokian is a Buddhist temple located in Oyamazaki-cho, Otokuni-gun, Kyoto Prefecture, renowned for its National Treasure tea room, Taian. Taian is believed to be the oldest existing tea room in Japan and the only surviving tea room that can be credibly attributed to Sen no Rikyu. Taian embodies the wabi-sabi aesthetic, showcasing a simple yet profoundly beautiful space.
Besides Taian, Myokian also houses the Meigetsu-do, a study believed to have been built in the Bunmei era (1469-1487) of the Muromachi period, modeled after the Reyunin Shoin of Myoshin-ji Temple. It was named Meigetsu-do because the mountain, Otokoyama, is visible from the study's front, and the moon can be seen rising from its peak.
Visits to Myokian require reservations via postcard approximately one month in advance. Even with permission, Taian is viewed only through a nijiri-guchi (a low crawlspace entrance), and entry inside is not permitted.
Myokian offers not only a glimpse into the world of tea ceremony but also a chance to experience history and nature. The beautiful gardens surrounding Taian offer seasonal flowers. Myokian is also located in the area where the Battle of Tennozan took place, allowing for a historically rich stroll.
When visiting Myokian, remember to make reservations in advance and immerse yourself in the beauty, history, and tranquility of this unique tea room and its surrounding environment.
