Tosa Shrine

Overview

Tosa Shrine, located in Kochi City, Kochi Prefecture, is a historic shrine that has been a focal point of faith as the guardian shrine of Tosa Province for generations. Its founding is said to date back to the 5th century, and the current shrine buildings stand after numerous transformations throughout its long history. The current shrine buildings were rebuilt by the Sengoku-era warlord Motochika Chosokabe and are designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan. The majestic architectural style showcases the beauty of traditional Japanese craftsmanship. A magnificent vermillion gate stands proudly at the front of the shrine, leading to the main hall (honden) and the worship hall (haiden). The honden is the most sacred area, housing the enshrined deity, while the haiden is where worshippers offer prayers. The shrine grounds are lush and green, offering beautiful scenery throughout the year. Enjoy cherry blossoms in spring, vibrant greenery in summer, stunning autumn foliage, and possibly even a winter wonderland.
