Tamazushi Shrine

Overview

Tamazushi Shrine is located in Yamaguchi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, situated on a hilltop commanding breathtaking views of the city. It's a shrine that has been a focal point of faith for many generations and is known as a power spot. While the exact founding date of Tamazushi Shrine is unknown, ancient documents suggest its existence as early as the Heian period. The enshrined deities are thirteen in number: Amaterasu Omikami, Toyouke Omikami, Susanoo no Mikoto, Okuninushi no Mikoto, Sukunahikona no Mikoto, Sarutahiko Omikami, Amenokoyane no Mikoto, Hinokagutsuchi no Mikoto, Ukanomitama no Mikoto, Kasuga Omikami, Takeminakata no Mikoto, Izanagi no Mikoto, and Izanami no Mikoto. The shrine grounds are enveloped in a tranquil and sacred atmosphere, making it an ideal place to escape the urban hustle and refresh your mind and body. Within the grounds, you'll find a gate, a haiden (worship hall), a honden (main shrine), a kagura hall, an office, and a temizuya (water purification basin), each imbued with a sense of history. In particular, the "Meoto Sugi" (Husband and Wife Cedar trees), the shrine's symbolic landmark, are centuries-old giant trees that are truly awe-inspiring. The Meoto Sugi are said to grant blessings for marital harmony, household safety, and the prosperity of descendants, leading many worshippers to offer prayers there.
