Samukawa Shrine

Overview

Samukawa Shrine is located in Samukawa-machi, Koza-gun, Kanagawa Prefecture, and is the Ichinomiya Shrine of Sagami Province. Records of offerings date back to the reign of Emperor Yuryaku (457-479), showcasing its rich history as an ancient shrine. It has long enjoyed deep reverence from the samurai class, with historical accounts of shrine building and land donations by figures like Minamoto no Yoritomo and the Odawara Hojo clan. The Tokugawa family also contributed to shrine reconstruction and land donations, demonstrating the enduring and profound respect shown by the warrior class throughout history. Samukawa Shrine is famous for its blessings of 'happo-no-suke' (protection from all eight directions), attracting numerous worshippers from across Japan. The expansive grounds are filled with highlights, including the sacred gate (Shamon), the main hall (Shaden), and the sacred garden (Shinen). Passing through the sacred gate, you'll be enveloped by a sacred atmosphere, fostering a tranquil and contemplative experience. Next to the main hall, you'll find a stunningly crafted orb representing the dragon god of directional protection. The shrine grounds also offer places to receive 'goshuin' (temple seals) – available with a handwritten inscription – and to draw 'omikuji' (fortune slips).
