Kita-mukai Kannon is a temple located in the mountains behind Zenko-ji Temple in Nagano City, Nagano Prefecture. Its formal name is "Shingon-shu Chizan-ha Hokko-zan Muryoju-in." Alongside Zenko-ji Temple, it's one of Nagano's most representative temples, and is sometimes called the "back garden of Zenko-ji Temple" due to its location.
Kita-mukai Kannon boasts a long history, believed to have been established during the Heian period. Its main hall is designated as an Important Cultural Property, allowing visitors to sense the weight of its history. Within the temple grounds, you'll find the Kaisan-do hall, where Honda Zenko, the founder of Zenko-ji Temple, is said to have practiced asceticism, and the Yakushi-do hall, dedicated to the Yakushi Nyorai (Healing Buddha), known for its spiritual power.
