INFO
The floors of the exhibition rooms are prone to echoing, so we recommend wearing shoes with soft or flat soles.
The exhibition rooms are temperature and humidity controlled to suit the artwork, so you may feel cold in summer and warm in winter. We especially recommend bringing a jacket in the summer.
If you are bringing young children, please hold their hands as much as possible while viewing the exhibits.
The Niigata Prefectural Bandaishima Museum of Art is located within Toki Messe, a multi-purpose facility on Bandaishima in Niigata City's Chuo Ward. Owned and managed by Niigata Prefecture, it opened on July 12, 2003. While it opened as a branch of the Niigata Prefectural Museum of Modern Art in Nagaoka City (also situated along the Shinano River), it distinguishes itself as an urban museum, showcasing primarily post-1945 (post-World War II) modern and contemporary art, with a particular focus on art from neighboring Asian countries, unlike the Nagaoka museum which emphasizes a natural, 'art-in-nature' setting. Both museums share approximately 6,000 pieces from the prefecture's art collection, forming the basis of their collection exhibitions. In addition, the Bandaishima Museum hosts rotating exhibitions featuring various art genres from Japan and abroad. The museum operates on a policy of alternating between special exhibitions and collection exhibitions, meaning there are no permanent exhibits. Its central location in Niigata City makes it easily accessible. Combined with its location near the mouth of the Shinano River, the museum offers a unique blend of urban and natural environments. We highly recommend a visit!
