Overview
Ohkouchi Sanso Garden is a stroll-style garden meticulously crafted over 30 years by Denjiro Ohkouchi, a renowned jidaigeki (period drama) actor. It is said he poured the majority of his film earnings into creating his ideal space.
The garden, which uses Arashiyama and Mount Hiei as its backdrop, offers stunning seasonal views. From the cherry blossoms of spring to the fresh greenery of summer, the vibrant autumn foliage, and the snowy landscapes of winter, the garden’s beauty changes throughout the year.
Scattered throughout the garden are structures built based on Ohkouchi's vision, including the middle gate, Dainokaku, Jibutudo, and Tekisui-an. These buildings blend traditional Japanese architecture with modern elements.
In the quietude, only the sounds of nature resonate, offering a sanctuary from the urban clamor. It’s a perfect haven for those seeking peace and relaxation.
A tea room is also located within the garden, where you can enjoy matcha and traditional Japanese sweets. The view of the garden from the tea room is truly exceptional.
Ohkouchi Sanso Garden is a tranquil oasis imbued with the soul of the film actor Denjiro Ohkouchi. We highly recommend a visit.
