Nakatajima Sand Dune is located in the southern part of Hamamatsu City, Shizuoka Prefecture, west of the Tenryu River. It's a sand dune stretching approximately 0.6km north-south and 4km east-west, a part of Enshuhama (the Great Enshu Sand Dune). While not as expansive as the Tottori Sand Dunes, the beauty of the wind patterns etched onto the sand by the sea breeze is captivating, attracting many to witness the first sunrise of the year. In summer, loggerhead sea turtles come ashore to lay their eggs, which are then carefully protected until hatching, after which the baby turtles are released into the sea. The unique sand dune environment supports various coastal plants such as beach morning glory (Hamahirugao) and sea couch grass (Kouboumugi).
It's also a tourist spot near the kite-flying venue of the Hamamatsu Festival, held annually from May 3rd to 5th (Golden Week), adding to its lively atmosphere. Its easily accessible landscape makes it a popular filming location for television dramas, movies, and promotional videos.
To the west of the sand dune lies the Windmill Park in Enshu Nada Kaibhin Park, offering a stunning collaboration of windmills and the sand dune. To the east, you'll find the Hamamatsu Matsuri Kaikan, showcasing exhibits related to the Hamamatsu Festival.
Nakatajima Sand Dune is a captivating tourist destination where nature and culture harmoniously coexist. We highly recommend a visit.
