Sado Island is renowned as a former habitat for a large population of Japanese crested ibis. However, due to habitat destruction and overhunting, the species faced imminent extinction in the late 20th century. To bring these birds back to the skies of Sado, dedicated conservation breeding programs have been implemented. Today, "Toki no Mori Park" is at the forefront of efforts aimed at their reintroduction into the wild. Within the park, the "Toki Shiryo Tenjikan" (Toki Information Museum) offers insights into the ibis's ecology, the history of conservation efforts, and the latest research findings. The adjacent "Toki Fureai Plaza" provides a unique opportunity to observe these birds soaring freely within a spacious enclosure. The Japanese crested ibis, with its elegant appearance and delicate calls, is a true symbol of Japan. A visit to Toki no Mori Park fosters appreciation for conservation efforts and raises awareness for environmental protection. Sado Island itself offers much more to discover beyond the ibis – explore its rich natural beauty, history, and culture. Enjoy the stunning landscapes while learning about the conservation program and experiencing all that Sado Island has to offer.
