Established in Hakone in 1969 as Japan's first open-air museum, The Hakone Open-Air Museum offers a unique space where art and nature intertwine. Across approximately 70,000 square meters of expansive grounds, visitors can enjoy about 120 works by leading 20th-century sculptors such as Rodin, Michelangelo, and Henry Moore, appreciating art on a grand scale with the outer rim of Mt. Hakone as a stunning backdrop. Particularly noteworthy are the outdoor exhibits, where you can experience art with all your senses. Feeling the powerful messages conveyed by the artworks amidst nature that changes with each season is a unique delight of an open-air museum.
The museum also features the "Picasso Pavilion," primarily showcasing Pablo Picasso's valuable ceramic works, and the "Manzù Room," displaying works by Giacomo Manzù, allowing for a rich art experience both indoors and outdoors. For families with children, interactive art installations like "Net Forest" and "Children's Museum" are popular. These exhibits are designed to help children naturally discover the joy of colors and forms through play. The museum provides a comfortable environment for families with small children, offering free stroller rentals and nursing rooms. As the grounds are undulating, comfortable walking shoes are recommended. On a fine day, the artworks shine even brighter under the blue sky, promising a truly memorable experience.
