Shinhidaka-cho's Nijuken Road Cherry Blossom Avenue is a spectacular sight, featuring roughly 3,000 cherry trees lining an 8km stretch of road from Shizunai Miyazono to Shizunai Tabara. Its history dates back to the Meiji era, when the road was built as a route for Imperial visits to the Niikappu Livestock Farm established by the Kaitakushi (the Colonization Office). Planted in the Taisho era, the approximately 3,000 Ezo-yamazakura (a type of Japanese cherry tree) lining both sides of the 36-meter (20 ken) wide road were transplanted from nearby mountains by the farm's employees. Over 100 years later, these majestic trees continue to herald the arrival of spring.
During the blooming season in early May, the "Shizunai Cherry Blossom Festival" is held. Visitors can stroll through a tunnel of blossoms, enjoying the fragrant air and the breathtaking view of cherry blossoms against the majestic Hidaka Mountains. It's truly a stunning spectacle.
Beyond the cherry blossoms, Shinhidaka-cho offers numerous attractions, including Shizunai, known for its thoroughbred horse breeding, and Mishiki, with its pristine natural beauty. After visiting the Nijuken Road Cherry Blossom Avenue, be sure to explore the surrounding area.
