Overview
The Oki Islands are an archipelago of four islands (Dogo Island, Shima-mae Islands, Chiburi Island, and Nishinoshima) located in the Sea of Japan off the coast of Shimane Prefecture. Influenced by continental culture since ancient times, the Oki Islands have cultivated a unique culture, making them a treasure trove of history and nature.
Dogo Island, the largest of the Oki Islands, features Mount Daimanji, its highest peak at 608 meters. Here you'll find the Shirousa Shrine, home to the legend of the "White Rabbit of Oki," a nationally designated natural monument. This shrine has been a center of faith for centuries and features a statue of the white rabbit and a pond dedicated to the legend.
Dogo Island also boasts the magnificent Kunihaga Coast, a breathtaking coastline dotted with unique rock formations and caves, offering stunning views of dramatic cliffs.
Shima-mae Island, the smallest of the Oki Islands, features Mount Otake, its highest peak at 382 meters. The island is home to the Toman Shrine, a historical site steeped in tradition. The shrine complex includes the main hall and a treasure museum.
Shima-mae Island also features the picturesque Urago Port, a tranquil harbor nestled in a serene cove, surrounded by fishing villages and settlements.
Chiburi Island, the northernmost island, has Mount Chiburi as its highest peak at 421 meters. It is also home to the Chiburi Island Lighthouse, reputed to be the oldest lighthouse in Japan. Built in the Meiji era, this lighthouse holds significant historical value.
Nishinoshima, the westernmost island, features Mount Nishinoshima, its highest peak at 241 meters. The entire island is designated as the Nishinoshima Global Geopark, showcasing the diverse landforms and geological layers shaped by volcanic and geological activity.
Throughout the Oki Islands, you'll find numerous restaurants serving fresh seafood and shops offering local specialties.
