Tonogayato Garden is a Tokyo Metropolitan park in Kokubunji City, Tokyo. It's a strolling-style forest and spring garden built on the south-facing slope of the Kokubunji Cliff Line. Once the villa of the Iwasaki family of the Mitsubishi Zaibatsu, Tokyo Metropolis purchased it in 1974 and developed it as a public park.
This garden offers a rich experience of nature and history. The undulating terrain, shaped by the Kokubunji Cliff Line, is enjoyable to explore. The garden also features a teahouse, pond, waterfall, and seasonal flowers. The cherry blossoms in spring and autumn foliage are particularly beautiful, attracting many visitors.
Tonogayato Garden provides a tranquil escape from the urban bustle, allowing you to leisurely stroll in a serene, natural setting. It's the perfect place to refresh your mind and body.
Tonogayato Garden is also historically significant. The area was once known as Tonogayato in Kokubunji Village, thriving as an agricultural area during the Edo period. It became the Iwasaki family's villa in the Meiji era, leading to the creation of the garden. Tokyo Metropolis's acquisition and development as a public park have preserved this precious history and natural beauty.
When visiting Tonogayato Garden, we recommend taking your time to stroll and reflect on the rich natural and historical surroundings; a perfect opportunity for relaxation and rejuvenation.
