Overview

Kagoshima (Tsurumaru) Castle Ruins is the former site of Kagoshima Castle, begun around 1601 by Shimazu Iehisa, the first lord of the Satsuma clan, shortly after the Battle of Sekigahara. While its official name is "Kagoshima Castle," it became known as "Tsurumaru Castle" after the nearby Castle Mountain (Joyama). It served as the political and economic center of the Satsuma domain, functioning as the Shimazu clan's castle throughout the Edo period. After the Meiji Restoration and the abolition of the feudal domains, the castle's role ended, and the ruins were developed into a park. Today, the ruins retain magnificent stone walls and bullet marks from the Satsuma Rebellion (Seinan War), offering a glimpse into the fierce battles of the past. The views from Castle Mountain are also spectacular, offering a panoramic vista of Kagoshima City and Sakurajima. In April 2020, the "Oromon" gate, located in front of the castle, was reconstructed, further enhancing its historical significance. This impressive gate, approximately 15 meters high and 20 meters wide, evokes the former grandeur of Tsurumaru Castle. Its restoration was achieved through the cooperation of local residents and businesses, symbolizing the legacy of Kagoshima's history and culture for future generations.
