Aono-domon is a tunnel in Nakatsu City, Oita Prefecture, hand-dug by Zenkai Osho during the Edo period. While traveling, Zenkai Osho encountered a dangerous mountain path in this area and resolved to dig a tunnel to ensure the safety of the people. He worked for over 30 years, using only a chisel and hammer, creating a tunnel approximately 342 meters long, with the tunnel section itself spanning about 144 meters.
Aono-domon allows visitors to appreciate not only the advanced engineering skills of the time but also Zenkai Osho's unwavering determination and compassion for the people. The interior of the tunnel retains traces of its hand-carved origins. Beyond the tunnel, a magnificent view of the Yaba-kei valley unfolds, offering a blend of natural beauty and historical significance.
Aono-domon is particularly stunning during the late autumn foliage season and attracts many visitors. In spring, nemophila flowers bloom profusely around the tunnel, creating a beautiful contrast of blue flowers and green leaves.
Aono-domon is a highly recommended sightseeing spot where you can experience historical romance and natural beauty. Be sure to visit!
