Ryūmon Falls

Overview

Ryūmon Falls, located in Kokonoe-machi, Kuju-gun, Oita Prefecture, is a magnificent two-tiered waterfall, 26 meters high and 40 meters wide, formed by the erosion of the Chikushi lava plateau. The thundering roar and spray of the cascading water are truly awe-inspiring! The second tier, where the water from the basin flows smoothly down, is said to be lively with children enjoying waterfall sliding in the summer. Legend says that Rankei Dōryū, a high priest who came to Japan from Southern Song China during the Kamakura period and spread Rinzai Buddhism, stopped at this place and named it after the Ryūmon Falls of Henan Prefecture, China. The area around Ryūmon Falls offers camping grounds and hot springs, allowing you to fully enjoy the abundant natural beauty. With beautiful scenery throughout the year, from the fresh greenery of spring to the autumn leaves, Ryūmon Falls is a tourist spot where you can experience both the grandeur of nature and its history.
