The Catholic Miuramachi Church is a Christian church located in Miuramachi, Sasebo City, Nagasaki Prefecture. As a landmark near Sasebo Station, it's a representative building of Sasebo, embodying history and elegance. Built in 1931, the church stands on a hill to the left and slightly in front of Sasebo Station, offering a commanding view of the naval port (Sasebo Port) and its surrounding facilities. Because of this vantage point, it was under military surveillance during World War II. At one time, its white exterior was coated in coal tar, turning it entirely black. However, it miraculously survived the Sasebo air raid on June 28, 1945, and was restored to its original white color after the war. Today, access involves climbing a steep staircase with a midway turn built into a retaining wall.
