Kokura Gion Yasaka Shrine is located in Kokurakita-ku, Kitakyushu City, Fukuoka Prefecture, within the grounds of Kokura Castle. Long affectionately called "Kokura no Gion-san" by locals, it was founded in 1617 (Genwa 3) and established by Hosokawa Tadaoki as the guardian shrine of the Kokura Domain.

Featured in the classic film "Muhomatsu no Issho" (A Life of Muhomatsu), this nationally renowned festival has a history of approximately 390 years.
