Tochoji Temple is a Shingon Buddhist temple located in Hakata Ward, Fukuoka City. Known as one of the three major temples of Hakata and its guardian deity, it was founded by Kuroda Nagamasa, the feudal lord of Fukuoka. Tochoji's founding dates back to 1607 (Keichō 12). Kuroda Nagamasa built it to pray for the protection of Hakata and the prosperity of his family. Situated in the heart of Hakata, the temple has been cherished by the local people for centuries.
One of Tochoji's highlights is its three-storied gate (Sanmon), designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. This imposing gate stands approximately 20 meters tall and 25 meters wide, serving as a symbolic structure of the temple. The second floor of the gate offers a spectacular observation deck with sweeping views of Hakata city.
Tochoji offers many other attractions. The main hall houses the principal image of Yakushi Nyorai (the Healing Buddha). The Kaisan-dō enshrines the founder of the temple, Sōkai Sōjō. The chōzuya is a place for ritual cleansing of the body and mind.
