Hakozaki Gu Shrine

Overview

Hakozaki Gu Shrine, located in Higashi Ward, Fukuoka City, is famous for enshrining Sugawara Michizane, revered as the god of scholarship. Michizane was a scholar and statesman during the Heian period, widely respected as a deity of academic achievement. Legend says the shrine was built to console Michizane's spirit after his exile to Kyushu. The shrine grounds feature a statue of Michizane and a treasure hall, offering a glimpse into history. Every October, the "Hakozaki Gu Houjoue (Hakozaki Matsuri)" festival takes place. Known as a highlight of autumn in Hakata, it features lively food stalls, portable shrines (mikoshi), and numerous other attractions. Hakozaki Gu Shrine is believed to grant blessings for academic success and warding off evil, attracting many worshippers, especially during exam seasons.
