Uwajima Castle

Overview

Uwajima Castle, also known as "Kuroyo Castle," stands majestically in Uwajima City, Ehime Prefecture. This hilltop castle, built on a hill 80 meters above sea level overlooking the Uwa Sea, boasts a remarkably well-preserved keep, designated as an Important Cultural Property. Originally constructed in 1603 by Date Hidemune, a son of the powerful Date Masamune, the castle became the center of the Uwajima domain. Its striking features include sturdy stone walls adorned with the Date family's "bamboo and sparrow" crest and a keep clad in jet-black tiles. The three-story, four-tiered keep houses a historical museum where visitors can delve into the history and culture of the Uwajima domain. From the keep, breathtaking panoramic views of the Uwa Sea unfold, particularly spectacular at sunrise and sunset, drawing numerous visitors. Uwajima Castle is a popular destination blending history and nature. The surrounding Uwajima Castle Site Park is especially beautiful during cherry blossom season. Beyond the castle, explore the charming Uwajima Castle Town with its well-preserved Edo-era streetscape.
