Barbecues and the use of portable burners are prohibited on the summit and in the summit parking lot.
Drone photography is restricted, similar to event venues. During the cherry blossom season and surrounding periods of high visitor volume, drone use is prohibited. Media and press photographers are requested to apply in advance to the Mitoyo City Tourism and Exchange Bureau (0875-56-5880).
Shiudeyama Mountain, standing at 352 meters above sea level, is located on the Shonai Peninsula in Mitoyo City, Kagawa Prefecture. This peninsula, jutting out into the Seto Inland Sea, is known for its long-standing association with the Urashima Taro legend, a tale deeply connected to Shiudeyama Mountain itself.
According to legend, when Urashima Taro opened the mysterious box in Myojin-sato (present-day Hakou) where he spent his youth, white smoke billowed out, forming a purple cloud that drifted towards the mountain. This is said to be the origin of the mountain's name, "Shiudeyama" (Purple Cloud Mountain).
From the summit, you'll be treated to a truly magnificent panorama, encompassing the islands scattered across the Seto Inland Sea and the mountains of Honshu in the distance. The spring cherry blossom season is particularly renowned for its beauty, with the mountaintop ablaze with blossoms, creating a stunning contrast with the blue sea.
Beyond cherry blossoms, Shiudeyama Mountain offers a captivating array of seasonal beauty: hydrangeas in early summer and vibrant autumn foliage. Facilities such as an observation deck, rest areas, parking, and restrooms are readily available, making it an easily accessible destination.
Furthermore, Shiudeyama Mountain boasts the remains of a high-altitude settlement dating back to the mid-Yayoi period (300 BC – 300 AD), designated as a national historical site. The on-site museum showcases artifacts and provides insights into the daily life of the inhabitants, making it an attractive destination for history enthusiasts.
With its rich natural beauty and captivating legend, Shiudeyama Mountain is one of Kagawa Prefecture's premier tourist spots. We highly recommend a visit.
