Yashima

Overview

Yashima is an island in the Seto Inland Sea, located in Takamatsu City, Kagawa Prefecture. From its summit, approximately 300 meters above sea level, you can enjoy stunning views of Takamatsu City and the Seto Inland Sea. Historically, Yashima is famous as a battleground in the Genpei War. Numerous historical sites related to this conflict remain on the mountaintop. Yashima-ji Temple is particularly noteworthy. It's the 84th temple on the Shikoku Pilgrimage and was founded in the early Heian period by Kūkai (Kobo Daishi), a renowned Buddhist monk. The temple houses many Buddhist statues and paintings, including the principal image of Eleven-headed Thousand-armed Kannon. Yashima-ji Temple is also known as the location where the Taira clan established their headquarters during the Genpei War. Just a short walk from Yashima-ji Temple, you'll find the ruins of Yashima Castle, built in the Muromachi period. It offers another magnificent vantage point overlooking Takamatsu City.
