Toyonei Pond Dam, located in Ohnohara-cho, Kanonji City, Kagawa Prefecture, is the oldest existing stone-masonry multiple arch dam in Japan. Completed in 1929, this early example of a multiple arch concrete dam was designated a National Important Cultural Property in 2006. Weathered by the passage of time, its appearance evokes the style and majesty of a medieval European castle, offering beautiful scenery throughout the year. The stonework on the dam's downstream side remains as it was originally constructed, captivating many visitors as a valuable historical structure. Construction began in 1926, led primarily by local residents. Its completion in roughly four years, thanks to the skill of the time and the efforts of the community, is nothing short of miraculous. Approximately 150,000 people, mainly local farmers, contributed to its construction. At the time, Japan lacked the technology for multiple arch dams, so it was imported from the United States. Thus, Toyonei Pond Dam, having incorporated cutting-edge technology for its time, is a valuable structure in the history of civil engineering and dam technology. Toyonei Pond, the reservoir created by the dam, is a crucial water source for the surrounding farmland and an irreplaceable asset to the local community. A walking path has been developed around the dam, allowing visitors to enjoy the scenery of the reservoir. From mid-to-late July each year, a "water release ceremony" (yuru-nuki gyōji) takes place. This involves lowering the reservoir's water level for inspection and cleaning, a truly impressive sight as the water rushes out. Toyonei Pond Dam is a precious place imbued with history, technology, natural beauty, and the sentiments of its local community. Be sure to visit if you are in Kagawa Prefecture!
