Omijima Island, with its stunning scenery, is known as the 'Marine Alps' and is designated as a National Site of Scenic Beauty and a Natural Monument. The approximately 40km coastline is lined with strangely shaped rocks and steep cliffs carved by the rough waves of the Sea of Japan, allowing you to fully enjoy the beauty of nature's creations. On a tour boat, you can closely observe unique rock formations such as cave entrances and stone pillars that can only be seen from the sea, and you will be overwhelmed by their power. On land, the Omijima Nature Study Trail is well-maintained, allowing you to easily enjoy trekking while observing the varied terrain and plant communities. Omijima Island is also known as a place loved by Kaii Higashiyama, one of Japan's leading painters. The murals 'Morning Tide' in the Imperial Palace and the fusuma paintings 'Waves' at Toshodaiji Temple feature the scenery of Omijima Island as motifs. The rich nature of Omijima has inspired many artists.
In the past, the Tsu area in the eastern part of Omijima Island prospered as a coastal whaling base from the Edo period to the end of the Meiji period. Kojoji Temple has a 'whale grave' to bury the fetuses of whales captured at that time, and the traditional performing art 'Tsu Whale Song' is still sung in the area. Omijima Island, woven with history and nature, continues to fascinate visitors.
