Overview

Shukkeien is a Japanese garden designated as a Place of Scenic Beauty, located in Hiroshima City's Naka Ward. Built in the Edo period as the villa garden of Hiroshima feudal lord Asano Naganari, it features ponds, bridges, and teahouses, offering a stroll through traditional Japanese aesthetics. Spring brings cherry blossoms and azaleas, summer lush greenery, autumn vibrant fall foliage, and winter snowy landscapes—a captivating spectacle year-round. Its history dates back to 1620 (Genwa 6), when Asano Naganari commissioned his chief retainer and tea master, Ueda Soka, to build the villa.
