Encho-en is Japan's largest Chinese garden, located in Yugahama-cho, Tohaku-gun, Tottori Prefecture. Themed after the imperial gardens (Royal Gardens) of China, it was built in 1995 as a symbol of friendship between Tottori Prefecture and its sister province, Hebei Province, China. The garden's name, Encho-en, derives from the ancient Chinese states of Yan and Zhao, located in Hebei Province. Situated south of Togoike (Togo Lake), one of the San'in Eight Views, the garden incorporates the lake into its breathtaking 10,000 m² landscape, designed in the Royal Garden style. The structures within the garden were designed by engineers from Hebei Province, China. Hebei artisans, using materials from China, pre-fabricated the buildings, which were then disassembled, transported to Japan, and reassembled under the supervision of Hebei engineers. The highlight of Encho-en is undoubtedly its magnificent scale and breathtaking scenery. The opulent setting, inspired by the gardens of emperors, creates a truly magical atmosphere, as if you've stepped into an ancient Chinese city. The garden features ponds, bridges, lush pathways, and offers beautiful seasonal scenery. Cherry blossoms abound in spring, while autumn brings stunning autumn foliage, showcasing a variety of moods throughout the year. The intricate carvings, paintings crafted by Chinese artisans, and carefully chosen plants throughout the garden add to its appeal. Adding to the experience, Encho-en hosts a captivating Chinese acrobatic show daily, featuring breathtaking performances including face-changing, aerial acrobatics, and lion dances. Encho-en offers a truly unique experience, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in Chinese history and culture while enjoying stunning scenery—a world apart.
