Overview

Kumano Hongu Taisha Shrine is a shrine located in Hongu, Hongucho, Tanabe City, Wakayama Prefecture. Along with Kumano Hayatama Taisha Shrine and Kumano Nachi Taisha Shrine, it forms the Kumano Sanzan, three sacred mountains. Its principal deity is Ketsumiko no Okami. It has drawn people's faith for ages and is now registered as a UNESCO World Heritage site as part of the "Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range. Kumano Hongu Taisha Shrine is a popular spot attracting many tourists because of its history and mystical atmosphere. In particular, the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage route, part of the World Heritage site, is beloved by many hikers as a place to experience rich nature and history.
