Kaiyukan Aquarium opened in 1990 as a core facility in the waterfront development of Osaka Bay. The giant tanks recreating the seas of the Pacific Rim overturned conventional aquarium wisdom at the time and boast one of the world's largest scales.
The highlight is undoubtedly the Pacific Ocean tank, where whale sharks swim leisurely. It uses 1.5 times the world's annual production of acrylic glass, achieving a maximum length of 34 meters and a depth of 9 meters.
It is also known for being the first in the world to successfully breed and display manta rays. The sight of whale sharks and manta rays coexisting is truly spectacular.
Pay attention to the exterior design of the building as well. The tricolor color scheme, symbolizing the combination of earth, water, and fire, and the fish murals were created by renowned designers.
In 2008, the number of visitors since its opening reached 50 million, the fastest record among domestic aquariums. The high number of repeat visitors tells the story of its appeal.
In 2020, the entrance building was renovated to commemorate the 30th anniversary of its opening. At the museum shop, you can enjoy shopping as if you are taking a walk on the water.
Kaiyukan is not just an aquarium, it is a special place that gives visitors inspiration, learning, and healing.
